<p>A short brain dump and some random things that come to my head at 2am.</p>
<p>One of my &#8220;resolutions&#8221; this year was to blog more and the first 2 weeks of this year didnt go so smoothly with that one. These past 2 weeks have been a blur.</p>
<p>With everything going on its been hard to even find a few minutes to sit and write. But all thats done now <img src='http://www.thefitnessprodigy.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif' alt="icon biggrin What Ive Been Up To (cool stuff for you)" class='wp-smiley' title="What Ive Been Up To (cool stuff for you)" /> </p>
<p>Everything ive been working on full speed is done and and its time to downshift a bit (only to 110mph). One of the main things is I finally finished the certification ive been working on for a while.</p>
<p>Usually when it comes to certifications and even certain degrees im really iffy about them. Nothing against any of them. Some of the certifications out there are actually pretty good. Its just that the majority of them are pretty shady and will leave anybody off the streets certified in a weekend. Sorry if that sounds harsh but it leaves the good guys to have to clean up the mess of the bad ones. Id rather go and learn from the top people in the industry, the ones that have been there and done that that are actually changing lives and making breakthroughs.</p>
<p>Thats the reason I chose this certification as my next cert. Fast forward to now and its done and its been awesome! Working with some of the top people in the country.</p>

<p>The weekend before this past one I was finally able to celebrate my mom&#8217;s bday (it was at the beginning of the year, yes I know I was late).</p>
<p>So my mom, her friend Marisol, and my lil bro came up that weekend. It was good to finally relax a bit and have some friends and family time.</p>
<p>Oh and its always mandatory whenever my mom comes up that I give her a workout and a few weeks of workouts to maintain her back at home.</p>

<p>With all the holidays around my inbox was flooded with questions about alcohol. Now with spring break coming up pretty soon I have a feeling my inbox is gonna get flooded again so im gonna answer it here.</p>
<p>My take on alcohol is easy, I can say dont drink. But honestly we&#8217;re all human and this is the real world so its gonna happen. So I have a 5 drink rule, as long as its 5 drinks a week or less you should be fine. It doesnt matter if its 1 a day or all 5 in one day just as long as it doesnt pass 5 in a week.</p>
<p>You dont like that rule? Would you have rather I said dont drink?</p>
<p>The other thing I do is green tea! Green tea is awesome when it comes to alcohol and its negative effects. Green tea is full of antioxidants that combat oxidative stress all over the body.</p>

<p>What does this mean and why should you care?</p>
<p>Well research shows that antioxidants in green tea will protect the liver from damage from alcohol. One study found that green tea eliminated liver damage from alcohol intake, and it may help you minimize feelings of a hangover because of better liver function. AWESOME RIGHT!!!</p>
<p>So next time you know your gonna have all 5 drinks in one night. Then consider drinking a few cups of green tea before and a few after or the next day if its been an all nighter.</p>

<p>Got an awesome email from the good folks at Groupon.com That were getting awarded with Best of SA 2011. One of my goals for 2012 was winning something like that so that was awesome!!!</p>

<p>Lately ive been playing top chef and playing around with healthy recipes and creating new ones</p>
<p>I normally have my own recipe for pizza using really thin pitas or flat outs and its great. But for someone whos looking for a really low/no carb pizza I found the perfect recipe.</p>
<p>Cool thing is its a way to get veggies in with your pizza (If the schools would make pizza like this then it&#8217;d be cool to classify it as a vegetable)</p>
<p>I got this one from none other then Dr. John Berardi</p>
<p>Cauliflower pizza</p>
<p>The crust is 1 head of cauliflower with 2 cups of low fat cheese, 3 whole eggs, and spices. And on top there&#8217;s some peppers, onions, tomatoes, more low fat cheese, and Parmesan</p>
<p>Ill be honest I havent tried this one yet so my best guess is mix that up and put it in the oven at 350 degrees for a few min.</p>
<p>Ill try it this weekend and let you know how it goes.</p>

Deadlifts are one of my favorite exercises. If I could only do one exercise itd be deadlift. But not this guys way. Aside from horrible form and lack of breathing, this is the perfect example of why yelling is stupid.<br />

<p>Finally after a great trip and playing catch up I found some time to knock out a blog post.</p>
<p>Just a little recap and lessons learned from our trip in vegas. It was actually pretty cool. When they said nobody sleeps over there I thought it was just a figure of speech. People really dont sleep over there. We learned alot and and had alot of fun from shooting a music video, catching a lobster, dancing with bears, olympic lifts all day, made out with an m&#38;m, getting asked how to get better at pushups while im being stripped searched, etc. Ahhh how fun that was!</p>

<p>Just a little recap and lessons learned from our trip in vegas. It was actually pretty cool. When they said nobody sleeps over there I thought it was just a figure of speech. People really dont sleep over there. We learned alot and and had alot of fun from shooting a music video, catching a lobster, dancing with bears, olympic lifts all day, made out with an m&amp;m, getting asked how to get better at pushups while im being stripped searched, etc. Ahhh how fun that was!</p>

<p><strong>Lesson#1</strong></p>
<p>Wear comfy shoes because you will walk. Alot. I honestly dont think ive ever walked that much in my life. The funny thing is it reminded me of when I was trying to gain some muscle weight. Sometimes you dont have the hunger to eat all the food necessary so a little trick was to throw in some slow cardio. I know its the anti of what most people think of &#8220;bulking up&#8221;. A little slow cardio helps bring up the appetite to eat. An old trick I learned <img src='http://www.thefitnessprodigy.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif' alt="icon wink What Happens In Vegas.........8 Lessons" class='wp-smiley' title="What Happens In Vegas.........8 Lessons" />  Plus it keeps your conditioning up. Nobody likes a bulky dude that cant go up stairs without wheezing and panting. &#8220;Bulking up&#8221; is an old school term for I just wanna eat whatever I want and not do any conditioning. Things dont work that way anymore.</p>

<p><strong>Lesson #2</strong></p>
<p>Learn whenever you can, and take what you need throw away the rest. The main reason I went to vegas was for a seminar and to catch up with an old mentor of mine. Even though russian and bulgarian style training arent my specialty doesnt mean I shouldnt learn about it. Each training style, philosophy, etc has its great points and downsides. Take what you like or can apply and throw out the rest.</p>

<p><strong>Lesson #3</strong></p>
<p>Rest! Over there no one slept and what was supposed to be day and night turned into just a 24 hour period. Day and night blended into one. I remember finishing a long day of the seminar then heading out to the gym to do olympic lifts till I was wiped out on the floor. Heading back to the hotel room around 10pm in the elevator looking like I just came out of the movie The Hangover. Eyes bloodshot, sweaty, exhausted, looking like hell. Then as im on the elevator going to my room theres a group of dudes in the elevator barely heading out for the night. One of them looks at me and was like DUDE!!! You look like you just pulled another all nighter!!!! ALL RIGHT VEGAS!!! WOOO!!!!</p>
<p>Of course so I wouldnt look like a loser I was like yea it was fun! Then they left to start their night. First thing I thought was ive gotta be the biggest dork in vegas right now!</p>
<p>I tried heading out that night with Jen and only lasted 2 hours. After that I learned how to pace and rest. Lesson learned.</p>

<p><strong>Lesson #4</strong></p>
<p>Failing to plan is planning to fail. Plan ahead. Usually whenever we head outta town I have all my food and stuff planned out or have a bunch of shakes or bars ready. Most of the time I eat cleaner when im traveling then when at home I dont know why but im not gonna argue with it. Plan your food so you can eat cleaner.</p>
<p>Also just like you should have a plan at the gym you should have a plan on what to do. Luckily one of our awesome campers gave us a list of stuff to do while we were out there so we wouldnt waste time and have fun.</p>

<strong>Lesson#6</strong></p>
<p>Dont let things get to you. While we were out I had a whole bunch of people happy we were finally taking a break. We havent had a break for about 2 years. So it felt good everyone telling us we deserved it.</p>
<p>Then I had a few emails upset about us taking a few days off for a break. I dont know why but I can have hundreds of people saying great things but I focus on the one negative thing one person sais. So the first 2 days over there I was actually pretty bummed out. It wasnt till an old russian guy at the seminar told me something cool.</p>

<p><strong>Lesson#7</strong></p>
<p>Dont forget your chapstick! On the flight back I encountered those new machines everyones so upset about. You know the ones that scan you and stuff. Theyre actually not bad so im not sure what the fuss is about. Theyre pretty efficient. So efficient they found the chapstick I had forgotten to take out of my side pocket in my shorts.</p>
<p>So I had to get taken to a room where I got strip searched. Funny thing is the guy asked the usual questions, what was I doing here,what was my occupation and after I told him I was here for a seminar and what I did he said thats what he figured I did cause im pretty fit. Then he went on talking about his training routine and how hes kinda stuck and wants to get better at pushups and asked for some advice. I helped him out a bit and we talked a little bit about post workout nutrition then I was on my merry way. It wasnt until I left that I realized I was talking to this guy, showing him different ways to help his push ups, etc all while I was in my underwear. Awkward.</p>
<p>moral of the story. Have all your things in check.</p>

<p><strong>Lesson#8</strong></p>
<p>Dont do what everyone else is doing. This was really the first time I gambled. I like the craps table and was learning how to play. Then along comes a &#8220;high roller&#8221; and rolls a 12. So he places $100 on his back bet, $100 on his odds, and $100 on the straight 12. If you dont know craps a straight 12 pays 30 to 1.</p>
<p>So after 2 rolls he hits the 12 again and wins $300 on his back bet, $300 on his odds, and $3000 on his straight 12. A total of $3600 on his $300 bet!!!!! I was freaked out!!!! Whoa that is AWESOME!!!!</p>
<p>So he cashes out and a couple of rolls later I decide to do the same thing. I was feeling lucky I guess. Well I ended losing! Luckily I only bet $5!</p>
<p>Moral of the story dont do what others do. If you see your favorite athletes workout routine on a magazine and do it yourself dont expect the same results. Theyve taken years to develop to that so 9 times out of 10 it wont work for you.</p>

<p>Random monday thoughts is the result of my Sunday night naps. <p>1. <strong>If the FDA is here to &#8220;help&#8221; us they wouldnt do budget cuts on the safety dept especially after the salmonella ground turkey thing.</strong></p>
<p>And if thats not enough, im a big believer in healthy clean food. I dont have a problem with raw milk, taste wise thats not my thing but I definately see the benefits. Same thing with grass fed beef and free range chicken.</p>

<p>Cool thing is its such a great quality product I think its really good for men as well.</p>

<p>Every once in a while I cant sleep because I have hundreds of ideas and random thoughts.  Im not sure if thats ever happened to you but the way I deal with it is writing it down.</p>
<p>A brain dump basically. If you have alot of thoughts at night try writing everything down and not worrying about it till the next day. Well a friend of mine actually got a hold of one of my brain dumps and loved it. He thought itd be great to put so heres some of the last one.</p>

<h4>You should always strive to get better. If planks on the feet are hard, then do them on knees. But eventually you want to get to them on the feet. Each workout strive to get better. Even if its on the feet for only 5 seconds. Thats 5 seconds better than last time. Get outta your comfort zone.</h4>

<h4>Throw away words like hate and cant. Hate is really negative. Sends out a bad vibe and the world sends that bad vibe back to you. Cant is another word. Saying cant leaves an imprint in your brain that really leaves you not able to. Now if someone asks if you can go to their house this weekend and you already have plans say things like I already have plans or I am not able to instead I cant make it.</h4>

<h4>Dont be an energy vampire. A person that drains your energy and never has anything positive to say. Always has problems and never is satisfied with anything. If you dont have alot of friends then take a step back and look at your energy and attitude.</h4>

<h4>Most people dont eat enough healthy fats. I asked a group of college atheletes why they dont take EFA&#8217;s or fish oil. They said because they dont have time or it tastes ugly. Then 5 min later I asked them if they like to party, of course all of them said yes. Then I asked if they like to take shots, of course again they all said yes. I asked what kind and the room was filled with shouting, tequila, vodka etc. Then I said if you can take a straight shot of tequila or vodka then why cant you take 1 tablespoon of macadamia nut oil or fish oil? The room got quiet&#8230;..</h4>

<h4>Which brings me to the next thing. Self awareness is a pain in the ass. Sometimes we dont like to fully see and test ourselves because it sucks knowing what youre weak at or doing things wrong. But its for the better.</h4>

<p>Mind hurdles are everywhere. Getting over them is usually one of the hardest things to do.</p>

<p>Ever heard of this mind hurdle? In order to burn fat you must eat more and exercise less.</p>
<p>Usually when a client hears this they laugh hard until they realize I&#8217;m serious. Its been burned into our brain that we have to eat low calories and exercise like a madman in order to burn fat. Its really hard to jump this mind hurdle and alter someones perception of this idea. But I promise once your perception has changed you&#8217;ll realize why you&#8217;ve been stuck in a rut for so long.</p>
<p>First lets rephrase that saying into Eat more (good food) exercise less (train smarter)</p>
<p>Let me tell you about my $10 of gas habit.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Since I was in high school I started a habit of putting only $10 in gas. I lived in small town so $10 would usually last me a good while until I needed to refuel again.</p>

<p>Now years later living in San Antonio I still have the $10 gas habit. Ill be honest I&#8217;m not sure why I do it, its just something I&#8217;ve always done. Ive been having to stop and refuel every other day practically.</p>
<p>How does this apply to eating more and working out less? Well lets say your body is a car. And gas is food. For a while your &#8220;car&#8221; runs good on what you put into it $10 of gas. But when the gas prices go up (your activity level) the more fuel gets used for it and the more gas you need. If you don&#8217;t start putting more than $10 your car wont perform good. It&#8217;ll start running out of gas quicker, then things like your fuel filter start giving out, your cars horsepower (muscles) aren&#8217;t fueled and primed for the drive.</p>
<p>So on and so forth.</p>
<p>Your body is the same way. When you work out more, your body starts to look for more energy (fuel).  If it&#8217;s  not getting it, it lowers your metabolism to try and preserve  whatever it can for fat stores (yes hold on to fat), sensing that you are running on low fuel &#8220;starving&#8221;.   That&#8217;s where the term starvation mode comes from. Strike 1</p>
<p>To take it a step further after being in starvation mode for a while and not eating enough protein. Your body starts breaking down muscles. It sees your muscles as very energy taxing and if it cut down on muscle then it can use the energy from the muscles making it much more efficient with the energy its given. Muscle breakdown also slows the metabolism. Strike 2</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>So next time you wonder why crackers water and 2 hours of cardio a day aren&#8217;t getting the fat loss you want or why you&#8217;ve plateau&#8217;d take a look at food quality and energy expenditure.</p>
<p>In my opinion rotating is the key to fat loss. Even in a low calorie diet you must rotate to account for what you&#8217;ve lost. If you&#8217;ve lost 20lbs and are still eating the same then its time to rotate to the right amount of food you should be eating at 20lbs lighter then its time to change your food intake to accommodate the loss.</p>
<p>Rotating carbs is another great way to eat, but ill get to that another day.</p>

<p>Huge, Strong, and Dedicated.</p>
<p>But they are also some of the smartest and most humble people I know. Theres even a term for them HUMBLECOCK.</p>
<p>What is a HUMBLECOCK?  <strong>hum•ble•cock</strong> /?h?m b?l ?k?k/ <strong><em>n.</em></strong> 1  a quietly confident individual who does not brag or otherwise flaunt his successes     2  one who chooses to forgo arrogance in favor of modesty</p>
<p>Now normally alot of things dont bother them. Even though theres a stereotype about huge strong guys these guys have a laid back attitude and are pretty cool. I know what youre thinking&#8230;..ok Jonathan why are you telling me all this. Trust me ill get to it quick ok.</p>
<p>Well theres another term that just came out as well. Its called a <strong>LUNK.  </strong>Whats a <strong>LUNK</strong>? A <strong>LUNK</strong> is- one who grunts, drops weights, or judges. [example: Ricky is slamming his weights, wearing a bodybuilding tanktop, and drinking out of a gallon water jug......what a <strong>LUNK</strong>!]</p>
<p>I swear I did not make this up. Its actually on a sign at a real popular gym and its where the term came from. Im not gonna say what gym but you can probably figure it out.</p>

<p>Now ill explain why im telling you all of this in a minute.</p>
<p>After talked about his goals and a deep assessment I realized if this guy didnt do something to change his lifestyle he was either gonna be looking up at a hospital roof or the roof of a coffin.</p>
<p>It was that serious. And he understood as well, after all that was the reason he contacted me. His doctor has been on him for months about his health.</p>

<p>So I asked him why havent you taken any steps to change if its been months that youve known this?</p>
<p>His answer was a simple &#8220;I didnt have enough time, I was too busy&#8221;.</p>
<p>I just let that one slide. So when we got to talking about the committment it would take and the price he laughed in my face. He didnt wanna pay and he didnt wanna do all those changes. His response was , &#8220;I can go to (I wont say the name of the gym but it ryhmes with Rallys) and do that for pennies&#8221;.</p>
<p>You mean to tell me you would rather have material possesions than better health and a longer life. I mean the price of your watch alone would cover the cost of the training. And the lifestyle change it would take to reach your better you is too much?</p>
<p>I dont mind if you dont join my program, there are places like parks that you can at least go and be active for free. For the sake of your health ill drive you to the park where you can workout for FREE. I just want you to change your life&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;seriously dude your doctor even said your chances arent good if you dont change.</p>
<p>I dont think he liked that very much as he got up and left.</p>
<p>Thats been bugging me all day. All the material things aside its change that scares people from doing what they wanna do. Fear of the unknown. Getting out of your comfort zone and changing.</p>
<p>I love the quote &#8220;You have to do something you youve never done in order to get what youve never had&#8221; I cant remember who wrote it, theres tons of variations of it.</p>
<p><strong>Change is something always needed but never welcomed. Its human nature.</strong></p>
<p>You either change to survive or youre a gonner&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;..sometimes literally like in this mans case.</p>
<p>I was watching a documentary on animal planet the other day about animals that go through extreme in order survive. There wasnt any cartoons on so I stuck with that show.</p>
<p>Anyways they talked about how penguins stand in the freezing cold for weeks on end. Birds migrate for thousands of miles. But one in particular freaked me out!</p>
<p>Ive never heard of this before until yesterday! It was about the Eagle.</p>
<p>So I ran to the laptop and researched it till I stumbled upon these pics.</p>

<p>Hope your fitness goals are going great!</p>
<p>Well there&#8217;s different views on this subject. Some trainers say no it&#8217;s impossible for a woman to build huge muscle and some say they can.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ll be honest, they are both right. But I used to think that no women can&#8217;t get huge.</p>
<h3>Building FREAKY muscle like this isn&#8217;t possible without some &#8220;drug enhancements&#8221;.</h3>

<p>But after training hundreds of women i&#8217;ve found that yes, there are few times that women can get bulky in certain areas. Some women are more capable to build muscle in certain bodyparts. Thighs, shoulders, and arms tend to be the main areas.</p>
<p>Before I go any further, <strong>DONT GET SCARED</strong>! Women don&#8217;t have enough testosterone to build <strong>FREAKISHLY</strong> huge muscle so unless you&#8217;re on a &#8220;chemical program&#8221; you won&#8217;t get huge! You can get bigger muscles but not cannonball type.</p>
<p>Ok back to what I was saying. After training hundreds of women I found that yes some women can build muscle more than usual.</p>
<h3>So here is what we do to counteract that:</h3>
<ul>
<li>
<p><strong>Find your strong point</strong>- This doesn&#8217;t apply to most women, but if you feel you have a bodypart that is stronger or bigger than normal then cut down the work on that bodypart. <strong><em>(I&#8217;m talking about muscle wise, its different if its fat).</em></strong></p>
</li>
<li>
<p><strong>Stop following magazine workouts</strong>- Alot of the workouts on the magazines are<strong> &#8220;old school&#8221;. &#8220;Old school&#8221;</strong> meaning bodybuilding type workouts. Workouts that are high volume. Good news is alot of magazines are starting to transition into interval type workouts but the majority havent.</p>
</li>
<li>
<p><strong>Eat whats right for you</strong>- Yes you have to eat more than the normal person if you workout, but eating tons of food isnt gonna help. Find the right foods and right amount every 3-4 hours. That doesnt mean eat mcdonalds every 3-4 hours. Remember eat like a bodybuilder and youll look like one.</p>

<li>
<p><strong>Use your bodyweight</strong>- Weights are great and I recommend all women use them. Honestly weights and bodyweight aren&#8217;t much different. They still stimulate the same muscle, but it&#8217;s more of a mental thing. Its easier to feel like youre getting huge if youre squatting with weights than if youre using your own bodyweight.</p>
</li>
<li>
<p><strong>Last thing is do interval training</strong>- Any form of high intensity interval training is <strong>GRRRRREAT</strong>! Studies show interval training helps women <strong>MELT</strong> the fat on their total body more quickly!</p>
</li>
</ul>
<p>Short and simple, don&#8217;t be scared of lifting weights. Just be cautious of what you do! Train smarter not harder!</p>

<p>I&#8217;ve touched on this topic before but I have been getting tons of emails about the subject that I feel I have to retouch it.</p>
<p>There is an evil that is out there and makes us think that we can&#8217;t do things. We can&#8217;t lose weight. We can&#8217;t workout. My knees will hurt if I do that.</p>
<p>I know you&#8217;ve heard them all.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s what cripples your results and keeps you where you&#8217;re at. Ever heard this?</p>

<p>Fear is what keeps you from doing anything. In order to succeed you have to kick fear in the a$$!</p>

<p><strong>Step 1: Kick Fear In The A$$</strong></p>
<p>          Everybody has a small piece in their brain that tells you you can&#8217;t do it. It tells you why workout, you wont lose weight or tone up anyways. So fear kicks in and makes you not wanna go to the gym. You fear the pain and soreness or you fear that you&#8217;ll workout and not get any results like so many of the horror stories.</p>
<p>So what are you scared of?</p>
<p>Whats holding you back?</p>

<p>Even if the goal isnt fitness related, maybe its to get a new job or start a business or get a date. Fear still holds you back either way. So step 1 is to shatter it!</p>
<p>I&#8217;m gonna give you a scenario a good friend of mine gave me. ( I like scenarios)</p>
<p>If your goal was to lose 20 lbs and be more confident whats stopping you and what does it take to get you there.</p>
<p>If you were on a sky scraper and on the another skyscraper is a million dollars and there is a small plank that gets you to it would you kick fear in the a$$ and go get it?</p>
<p>Chances are about 38% of you said yes.</p>
<p>Ok so lets switch it up. (Warning: this is where it gets real!)</p>

<p>lets say your on a sky scraper and on the other sky scraper is your husband, wife, or kids are on the other side&#8230;&#8230;.with a gun to their head and they are gonna die if you don&#8217;t walk across that plank to them!</p>
<p>Now what are you gonna do!!!</p>
<p>It sounds extreme but thats what it takes to get you to your most stubborn goals.</p>
<p>So what if your goals are the same way. What if you put that same scenario but instead of that plank insert your goal. Something will happen to your family if you dont lose 20lbs, or get that job.</p>
<p>This mindset of kicking fears a$$ makes all the difference.</p>
<p><strong>Step 2: How To Breakthrough</strong></p>
<p>          So once youve overcame your fear whats the next step? How do you get to your goals after fear is gone.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><strong>GET OUT OF YOUR COMFORT ZONE!</strong></p>

<p>Going back to that quote up there. Humans are simple and like to stay and do things they are comfortable with. So if you&#8217;re comfortable staying on the couch or doing the same thing then you are always gonna be where your at.</p>
<p>Next thing you know 2 months pass and you&#8217;re now 30lbs heavier.</p>
<p>You have to get out of your comfort zone. If you wanna lose 10lbs or fit into a bikini but are scared or uncomfortable at a gym or working out, Im sorry but those 10lbs will end up packing on instead of off. You have to step out of your comfort zone and do the things that are outside of your comfort zone.</p>
<p>Go skydiving if youre afraid of heights! Talk to random people if you&#8217;re scared of crowds. If you&#8217;re scared of working out do it with a friend or a group.</p>
<p>Find ways to get out of your comfort zone and once you do you wil see the great results and youll also see that now that is part of your zone and you are able to do more.</p>
<p>Trust me. Things will never get done when FEAR is involved, and even more so if you are comfortable where youre at. so if you are comfortable where youre at then ignore all that ive said but if you wanna change then step out and take action!</p>
